The Importance of the Amazon Forest
The largest tropical forest in the world, the Amazon Forest is essential for our lives. It is a great agent, for example, in reducing the levels of greenhouse gas pollution on Planet Earth.

The beginning of the project took place in 2012 and the period foreseen for its duration is 37 years, which can be extended. The main objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through avoiding degradation.
In order to achieve the objective, the developed actions foresee: the conservation of forest ecosystems and biodiversity; sustainable social development in the region, including the promotion of ecotourism and scientific research, and reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions through curbing deforestation and forest degradation.
The main objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

AGROCORTEX REDD PROJECT
Agrocortex Madeiras do Acre is a company in the Brazilian forest sector focused on sustainability. The company supports one of the largest sustainable forestry projects in Brazil aimed at long-term timber production in the Amazon rainforest, the Agrocortex REDD Project.
It is based on practices that respect the environment so as never to exhaust natural resources and still help the forest to regenerate.
“From 2014 to 2020, the project has already avoided the deforestation of 5,300 hectares of forest. In addition, it generated income and employment for one of the poorest regions in Brazil”, explained Marcos Pretto, CEO of Agrocortex.

FORTALEZA ITUXI FARM
Fazenda Fortaleza Ituxi aims to protect forests located in one of the regions with the highest deforestation rate in the Amazon: the municipality of Lábrea, in Amazona’s State. The project also includes the implementation of activities to support and ensure sustainable forest management, benefiting the local community.
The project seeks to maintain sustainable management and avoid deforestation, boosting the capacity of the local community, which depends on the forest, with the cultivation of açaí and nuts. It started in 2013, with an estimated duration of 30 years. By 2015, a reduction of 1,181,732 tCO2 of greenhouse gas emissions was estimated.
The forest management plan started to be implemented in 2013 and has a proposed duration of 30 years. This year alone, a reduction of 137,675 tons of carbon dioxide (CO²) is estimated.

Why are preservation projects important?
These are projects that reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by protecting the forest that, in the absence of the project, would be deforested in an unplanned manner.
In addition, these projects also help to preserve local fauna, flora and water resources, as well as generate jobs for local communities in monitoring, patrolling and sustainable forest management activities.
